Cushy flanges are soft silicone, not hard plastic: the tunnel flexes to your shape, so the extra 2-4mm you may have been told to add for a rigid flange will draw areola into the tunnel and can potentially reduce your output. If your IBCLC has sized you for silicone, use their number. Caught between two sizes? Go down, not up.

If the silicone feels sticky for the first few uses, a little pumping spray or coconut oil helps and it settles after a few sessions. Hearing air escape at the base? Twist and push the flange into the connector at least 1/4 inch - a partly seated flange is the most common cause of lost suction.
